Dan and Rosie White of Drive Country Australia have planned a scenic discovery drive in association with the Festival of Speed on Tweed.
Starting out from Tumbulgum at 9:00 am on Friday, September 7, 2007, the tour will comprise 125 km of sealed public roads in the Tweed Valley along with the option of a multiple choice observation questionnaire at points of interest en route. Crews should take some 2 to 2½ hours to reach the finish at Murwillumbah in time for an early lunch before taking part in the televised midday parade at the start of the Festival of Speed on Tweed.
The Ferryside General Store & Post Office on Riverside Drive at Tumbulgum
is situated directly across the road from the start of the discovery drive.
Amir, Karen and Chris have agreed to extend the trading hours at the General
Store and will be open for breakfast from 7:00 am that Friday. We can heartily
recommend their bacon & egg burgers and they whip up REALLY GREAT
coffee!!
The front verandah of the store overlooks a tranquil stretch of the Tweed River. Offering a grandstand view of the early morning activities, it is the ideal spot to meet up with fellow participants and enjoy top quality food at very reasonable prices while the pre-event paperwork is being processed.
The travel schedule allows ample time to enjoy fascinating and ever-changing landscapes along the discovery drive. The roads are equally diverse as they wend their way through pockets of rainforest nestled in quiet gullies alongside the riverbank, venture deep into heavily-timbered valleys dotted with quaint villages and hamlets steeped in the history of mid-19th century settlement or cross the open stretches of coastal wetlands.
Several loops close to Murwillumbah allow for a short tour option of 60 km on sealed roads and country lanes through foothills that once were the base of Mount Warning before it “blew its top”. This provides an attractive alternative for owners of vintage and veteran road-going machines, along with Speed on Tweed enthusiasts and owners of vehicles taking part in the Shannons Show & Shine who may have a few hours spare on Friday morning.
All drivers must have a civil licence valid for use in Australia and the vehicles taking part in the discovery drive shall be registered for use on public roads. These documents (either original or certified copies – photocopies cannot be accepted) will be checked before the crews depart on the drive.
Entry will be $30-00 for each vehicle taking part in the Good morning, Tweed Valley discovery drive. Entries will be accepted up to one hour before the start of the tour.
Following an early lunch at the Murwillumbah finish point, a selection of the classic vehicles that took part in the discovery drive will assemble with the cars and stars of the Festival of Speed on Tweed for the televised midday parade on Main Street, Murwillumbah.
The group of selected vehicles will be invited by the Festival Organisers to take part also in the
program of displays and processions throughout the Festival of Speed on Tweed weekend.
After the Friday parade, activities at Murwillumbah Showgrounds swing into top gear as race teams
settle in along pit lane in readiness for the Speed on Tweed competitions. If the afternoon is your
own, it will be time well-spent to take a stroll around the grounds, watching what is happening and
experiencing the “up close and personal” nostalgia of car race meetings from earlier eras.
